LAWN FACT

The best defense against weeds is a healthy lawn

Weed Prevention and Control

Weed Prevention and Control from the Healthy Lawn Experts

Weeds disturb the refreshing energy a healthy lawn can bring. They are the catalyst, pivot point, and curator of disaster and can dramatically reduce your home’s value. THL Blue’s Weed Prevention and Control Program can eliminate and greatly medicate weeds from returning to your lawn. Your lawn being weed-free is an important variable to its beauty and health, and increases your property value.

Weed Prevention and Control Program Process

Weed prevention and control is science and not a broad-stroke application. Identifying weeds in your lawn is our first step. We then apply the most effective herbicide to eliminate existing weeds and prevent future growth.

To prevent weeds from forming, THL Blue will apply a pre-emergent solution in the fall and spring to stop late-winter and early summer weeds from growing. We will also apply a post-emergent for existing weeds. Depending on the type of weed, multiple applications may be necessary until your lawn is weed-free.

What is a Pre-emergent Herbicide?

A pre-emergent herbicide prevents most weeds from emerging. Annual weeds that appear after the winter and summer can be greatly medicated by using a pre-emergent. Fall and spring applications of a pre-emergent attack the seeds during the germination process, and block weeds from producing the proteins needed for growth. The process is called mitosis.

In short, pre-emergents do not prevent seeds from germinating, but rather damages root development causing the weed to die from its inability to properly find and/or process nutrients.

What is a Post-emergent Herbicide?

A post-emergent herbicide kills weeds that have emerged from seeding and entered the plant phase. There are four types of post-emergents.

Selective

Targets specific weeds and will not harm nearby grass or other plants.

Non-Selective

Will kill weeds and any nearby grass and plants. (Rule of thumb: It does not select which plants to kill.)

Systematic

Absorbed directly into the plant to kill it at the root.

Contact

Coats the leaves of the plant and prevents photosynthesis.
